The Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani) is a large, dark but also colourful resident of the rocky shores of the BC coast. These birds are quite distinctive with their ‘target’ like eye ring and large red bill. They will often eat shellfish such as limpets and mussels, which they smash open on the rocks, but are rarely known to eat oysters! This shot was taken out on some rocks off Tofino, earlier this year.
