I took this shot of a bison emerging from a snow filled gully in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming a couple of years back. Yellowstone is the only remaining place in North America were bison have continuously been found roaming free since prehistoric times. These formidable looking bovine are the continents largest land mammal, with the males coming in almost double the size of the females at around 900kg. Don’t get around to agitating one if you can help it – if they chase you they’ll catch you with a top speed of 55kph and getting behind a fence might not save you either, they can easily jump over 1.5 metre objects. I figure those horns will hurt if they hit! See also Buffalo or Bison?
