Sentries on Guard

Here’s another shot from earlier in the spring here on the BC coast. I was slowly passing this group of mergansers and was totally surprised when they stood up and parted to find this blue-winged teal hiding out behind them. Initially, as seen here, the mergansers stood as if sentries protecting the teal, but they pretty soon entered the water and fled, leaving the little duck sat alone on the log. Blue-winged teal (Amas discors), one of the smallest members of the duck family, are rarely seen here on the coast, but are sometimes spotted, as I suspect with this guy, whilst on migration as they head to nest sites farther north or inland.
