This is one of the images that really struck a chord in the Khutzeymateen this year – a young mother grizzly bear with one of her tiny, undersize looking cubs of the year fast asleep on her back. It was a very traumatic season for this family of bears with some very severe lessons learnt by the young mum, (she’s only six years old) whom I’ve been photographing in this area since she was the size of her little cub herself. Sadly the day after this shot was taken the cub disappeared and has not been seen again. But I have seen mum several times since and she was looking in fantastic shape when I saw her last and will hopefully be back, better prepared, with new cubs next spring.
